The Podcast Is Dead – An Obituary

It may seem a little strange that I, a self-confessed podcast-o-holic, should be pronouncing the death of the podcast. Stranger still is that I’m making this declaration whilst still producing ‘The Ultimate Movie Podcast,’ and have no intention of stopping. You might think all is not entirely as it seems, but you’d be wrong. Even as our podcast continues to grown in popularity month on month, I have never been more convinced that the medium that I love so dearly is as dead as… I’ve said enough.
So, how did I arrive at this conclusion? That’s what the experts say. There’s not a week goes by that I don’t read that this is the end of podcasting and that the future is live-streaming. It must be true. You might at this point suspect I’m being a little sarcastic – believed by many to be the lowest form of wit. However, listeners of the multi-million downloaded Ricky Gervias Podcast will know that puns are in fact the lowest form of wit. I’ll attempt to control myself.
Back to the conclusion; the podcast is dead for the simple reason that for the vast majority of people it was never alive. Let’s face facts; whilst many people might have heard the phrase they’re more likely to be able to give you a clearer definition of dogging than podcasting. They go about their lives, blissfully unaware of this magical medium. That said, let’s deal with the experts.

Most of the people I talk to about podcasts listen to them while they’re commuting, not while they’re sat at home. At home people mainly watch television. Prior to that, they listened to radio. Did television stop people listening to the radio? Thankfully, not while they’re driving. Hence, people continue to listen to podcasts, and I will not be watching live-streamed video. As for streamed-audio, streamed anything… this is not a mobile solution – that’s for when you’re at home – and don’t get me started on the ‘live’ part of that. We’re in an on-demand world, why would we take a backwards step into the live-world? Terrible place.
I for one am more than happy with my pre-recorded, downloaded, and totally dead world of podcasting. Why would I put myself at the mercy of a cell dependant, streamed media – with the signal dropping in an out that would be more like plod-casting… and that’s the lowest form of wit.
